The film covers the story behind Hunter S. Thompson's groundbreaking article, The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved, for a 1970 edition Scanlan's Monthly.  The piece is widely recognized as the spark that ignited "Gonzo Journalism," a style widely used today in which stories are covered without any claims of objectivity, often from a first-person point of view.

The short is illustrated in the signature style of Ralph Steadman, who provided the original artwork for The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved .  An interview with Steadman is featured in the film.
